SAND was introduced into circulation through three phases of a liquidity mining program. The first phase launched in September 2020, rewarding users who provided liquidity to a SAND/ETH pair on Uniswap. The second phase introduced a yield multiplier based on the amount of LAND ownership a user has. These rewards were carried into the third phase with an additional 1.5 million SAND tokens added to the reward pool.

The maximum supply of SAND tokens is set at 3,000,000,000, with 705,000,000 SAND tokens, or 23.5% of the total supply, currently in circulation.

Once a player acquires a piece of LAND, they can populate it with games and ASSETs or merge multiple LANDs into an ESTATE. A total of 166,464 LANDs are available on The Sandbox metaverse map. After purchasing LAND, players can increase its value and earn by renting it out or filling it with various content.

GEM and CATALYST determine the rarity level, value, and attributes of ASSETs. CATALYST creates empty sockets on NFTs that can be filled with GEMs. Acquiring higher-quality CATALYSTs results in more empty sockets on an ASSET.
