Stellar (XLM) was founded in 2014 by Joyce and Jed McCaleb as an alternative to asset transfers. Lumens, the cryptocurrency of the system, was launched one year after the inception of Stellar.
Stellar (XLM) is a distributed and open-source payment system. Its primary goal is to facilitate international asset transfers between banks. International asset transfers through banks are inconvenient in terms of both time and cost. The aim with Stellar (XLM) is to conduct these asset transfers quickly and at low fees.
Stellar (XLM) conducts these transfers using decentralized servers and distributed ledger technology. It allows for much faster transfers compared to the Bitcoin and Ethereum systems.
Although Stellar was initially created for asset transfers, the multi-layered Stellar system also offers the possibility to create and execute smart contracts. This capability allows for the production and transfer of new tokens on the Stellar network.

Both Stellar and Ripple systems were initiated with the aim of facilitating fast and inexpensive asset transfers.
When Ripple was launched in 2012, its goal was to compete against major money transfer companies. It aimed to be an alternative to real money transfer tools. McCaleb, one of the founders of Stellar, left Ripple after having disagreements with its management and founded Stellar.
